Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as police and firefighters went into the property close to Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the scene and another man who ran away after the incident was found shortly later. All three have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area displayed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
