Major Internet Failure Hits Dozens Websites and Applications

A large-scale online outage has disrupted many sites and apps globally, with users experiencing issues getting online after problems at Amazon’s web hosting system.

The affected platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-owned operations including its primary shopping platform and the Ring security doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems accessing the HM Revenue and Customs site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring customers used networks to report their doorbells were not working.

In the UK alone, notifications of disruptions on specific applications reached the thousands for every service.

The company stated that the issue began in the Atlantic coast of the United States at the cloud division, a division that provides crucial internet backbone for numerous firms, who utilize resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest online services service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The widespread consequence appeared to affect services globally, with the outage tracking website reporting problems with the identical platforms in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on online failures, also reported a rise in problems on that morning, with many of them situated in Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the outage started.
