Snapshots and Melodies as Ethiopians Celebrate Annual Thanksgiving
Countless individuals of vibrantly dressed participants converged in the heart of Ethiopia's capital for the annual gratitude celebration over the past days.
The festival is honored by the Oromo, Ethiopia's largest population group, and takes place at the conclusion of the country's major monsoon period.
Each year, festival-goers assemble around revered rivers and lakes to give thanks to their higher powers for the greenery that the precipitation have brought.
"I've been celebrating the festival for the last nine years," commented 25-year-old Moata Abdulmajid.
"To me, this event represents my cultural background, it reflects the honor and significance of my people."
Gentlemen, females, the senior citizens and the youth all join in, adorned in striking clothes and ornaments.
They chant, move rhythmically, share stories and place freshly cut foliage and blossoms in liquid - representing life, renewal and hope.
International Participation
Irreecha not only draws people from throughout the country, visitors travel from internationally.
"I visited last year - it was so good, so beautiful, I brought my offspring with me this year," said Claire, hailing from Northern Ireland.
"It's wonderful. All people greets you, each person wants to give you a kiss and says welcome."
Festival Program
The opening day of the event occurred on the weekend in the main city. On the next day, festival-goers made their way to Bishoftu, a community near the capital.
Although the festival has its origins in traditional beliefs, it is now celebrated by the larger part of the community, regardless of their religion.
Recent Trends
In the last ten years, the figure of people joining the event has grown significantly. This is partially because of the growth of online networks, where numerous youth capture their outfits, traditional dances and singing during the gathering.
Previous Background
In the past, the festival was served as a platform for public dissent - the Oromo community have historically expressed concerns about systemic disadvantages.
Nonetheless, this year's celebration took place calmly, with an priority on happiness, togetherness and heritage appreciation.
