The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. But, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this rise, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming looks particularly powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
